Kick Start Your French Quote of the Week 16

Our weekly dose of inspiration with Kick Start Your French Quote of the Week 16 is there again. I really like this quote as it is an eye opener to some of the values that come with learning a specific foreign language. At first we often do not even realise that we have gained these incredible values.

Kick Start Your French Quote of the week 16 - If we spoke a different language, we would perceive a somewhat different world. -Ludwig Wittgenstein Si l'on parlait une langue différente, on percevrait un monde assez different - Ludwig Wittgenstein

If we spoke a different language, we would perceive a somewhat different world.

Ludwig Wittgenstein

Si l'on parlait une langue différente, on percevrait un monde assez different.

Ludwig Wittgenstein

I really like the fact that being able to speak another language helps us to see a different world. Indeed, it is undeniable that when we learn a new language we also learn some elements of the culture of the new country and of the people who speak this foreign language.

Those of us who have learned Spanish for instance have probably learned that Spanish people usually spend long hours during lunch time to eat, relax and sleep while being around friends and family members. If you have learned French, you may have also learned about some of the food that French people eat for breakfast such as croissants, pain au chocolat or baguette. You have probably also come to know that France was renowned for some of the world's best wines and cheeses.

All of these little details which might seem insignificant at first when you learn the language, can actually help us better understand how much Spanish or French people care about family relationships and good food.

So the more you know about a language the more you discover things about the people who speak this language. This eventually leads us to be more open to other cultures. From my own experience, I can say that this helps us better understand and appreciate differences around us and even welcome them. Being culturally sensitive is an asset to our global world.
